Single Unit Vertical Kaplan Turbine
Gunesli-II Hydropower Project is a diversion type hydroelectric facility that makes use of the head between 155 m and 103 m of Solakli Creek for energy generation. The construction of the project is still ongoing and it is planned to operate within the first half of 2013.
The project is composed of weir structures, 3,300 m long open channel flow conveyance tunnel, forebay, valve room, 220 m long penstock, powerhouse and a 140 m long tail race canal. The type of conveyance structure is determined as tunnnel and social impacts and the cost of expropriation were minimized. Another important structure within the scope of the project is the circular forebay with 25 m diameter and 18.40 m height. Implementation of the circular forebay reduced both the volume of excavation and the total cost. By use of the storage capacity of forebay and the tunnel, the flows under minimum turbine capacity can be stored and then turbined efficiently which increases regulation ratio. The emergency valve is installed at the inlet of the penstock that serves as the turbine inlet valve eliminates the extra cost for turbine operation valve. Considering the head and project discharge, single unit of Kaplan type turbine is used. The deep excavations at and around the powerhouse were safely executed with anchored pile support system designed by Prosem Engineering.
